Shorter Works (14 minutes and under)
Feria Mágica Overture (Magic Fair)

Description: Rodriguez’s delightful score is a series of variations on the Mexican equivalent of “Happy Birthday,” called “Las Mañanitas.” The composer orchestrated several melodies composed by children and superimposed them over the original Mexican folk melody. In performances for young audiences, children can learn the original song before hearing it played with the variations.
Composer: Robert Xavier Rodríguez

The score includes quotations of two actual Mexican piñata songs, “Hora y fuego” and “En las noches de posadas,” which are traditionally sung at fiestas, such as birthdays or at Christmas time.
